Bravo’s first original scripted series Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce will run for at least five seasons after a three-season pickup for the dramedy starring Lisa Edelstein, which has been renewed for Seasons 3, 4 and 5. The mega size of the renewal is usually reserved for TV’s biggest shows, with Girlfriends’ Guide joining an elite small group of shows that have scored three-season pickups that includes CBS’ blockbuster The Big Bang Theory (Big Bang produces 24 episodes per season vs. Girlfriends’ 13).
In addition to garnering a lot of buzz with its launch, supported by a provocative marketing campaign, that put Bravo on the original scripted programming map, Girlfriends’ Guide has been a solid ratings performer — the recent Season 2 finale drew a season-high 1.2 million viewers in Live+3. Also playing a role in the three-season renewal decision is the fact that Girlfriends’ Guide is produced by Bravo sibling Universal Cable Prods, so the supersized pickup is helping to build an asset for the company.
From creator and exec producer Marti Noxon, Girlfriends’ Guide follows the life of self-help writer Abby McCarthy (Edelstein) as she navigates being single in her 40s with the help of her girlfriends Phoebe (Beau Garrett), Delia (Necar Zadegan) and Jo (Alanna Ubach).
“With our first foray into scripted, Bravo’s viewers fell in love with Abby and her close-knit group of friends experiencing the fabulous joys and deep disappointments of juggling dating, careers, family and relationships,” said Frances Berwick, President of Lifestyle Networks, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment.
On Bravo, Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce was followed by comedy Odd Mom Out, which has been renewed for a second season, and the recent greenlight of the network’s third original scripted series, My So Called Wife (working title), also from UCP. It is created and executive produced by Adam Brooks and actor Paul Adelstein. Adelstein, who was a regular on Girlfriends’ Guide for the first two seasons, recently joined the new Hulu series Chance, which has a two-season order, after completing his obligations to Girlfriends’ Guide. He might return for guest appearances.
